Four international flights bound for Bangladesh were diverted to Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) on Sunday due to dense fog and poor visibility at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) and Chittagong’s Shah Amanat International Airport (CGP). Both Bangladeshi airports lack CAT III Instrument Landing System (ILS) compliance, making operations challenging in low-visibility conditions.
The affected flights includedJ90533 (Kuwait-Dhaka) with 143 passengers on board (POB); G90518 (Sharjah-Dhaka) with 154 POB; BS0350 (Abu DhabiChittagong) with 152 POB; BS0346 (Sharjah-Dhaka) with 146 POB. Kolkata Airport, the busiest in Eastern India, is the only facility in the Eastern and North-eastern regions equipped with CAT III ILS, enabling safe landings and takeoffs during low-visibility situations such as fog.

Airport authorities in Kolkata accommodated the diverted flights, ensuring passengers’ safety and providing necessary assistance during the unexpected arrival.
